Conditions we treat
Managing slipped disc discomfort
A slipped disc rarely slips. The term usually describes a bulge or herniation pressing on nearby structures, which is why the pain so often shows up somewhere other than your back.

What it feels like
Symptoms people describe
- Pain radiating from the back into the buttock, thigh or calf
- Numbness, pins and needles or weakness in the leg or foot
- Pain that worsens with sitting, coughing or sneezing
- Difficulty straightening up or standing for long
- Symptoms clearly worse on one side
Why it happens
Common causes
Sustained loading
Long periods seated, particularly with poor support, raise pressure through the discs.
Lifting with rotation
Bending and twisting under load is the classic mechanism for a disc injury.
Gradual change
Discs change with age, and a small additional load can then be enough to trigger symptoms.
Previous injury
An earlier back injury never properly rehabilitated leaves the area vulnerable.
How we treat it
Our approach
- Careful assessmentA neurological screen matters here. If we find signs that need imaging or a medical doctor, we refer rather than treat.
- Decompression and tractionReducing pressure on the affected level.
- Symptom controlManual care and therapeutic ultrasound to settle the surrounding tissue.
- Graded rehabilitationRebuilding tolerance to load, which is what stops a disc problem recurring.

Questions
Slipped disc questions
Do I need surgery for a slipped disc?
Most disc problems do not require surgery. Assessment tells us whether yours should be seen by a medical doctor, and we will say so plainly if it is.
What is spinal decompression?
A traction based treatment that gently reduces pressure through the affected segment, used alongside manual care and rehabilitation.
Why does my leg hurt more than my back?
When a disc irritates a nerve root, symptoms are often felt along the path of that nerve rather than at the disc.
How long is recovery?
Highly variable. What is consistent is that rehabilitation, not just symptom relief, determines whether it returns.
