Conditions we treat
Managing sciatica discomfort
Sciatica is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The pain runs down the leg, but the cause is almost always further up, and finding it is what makes treatment work.

What it feels like
Symptoms people describe
- Pain running from the lower back or buttock down the back of the leg
- Burning, electric or shooting quality rather than a dull ache
- Numbness or pins and needles in the leg or foot
- Weakness pushing off the foot or lifting the toes
- Worse with sitting, driving or bending forward
Why it happens
Common causes
Disc irritation of a nerve root
The most common cause, where a bulge irritates the nerve as it exits the spine.
Narrowing of the exit space
Age related narrowing can reduce the room a nerve has as it leaves the spine.
Deep gluteal tightness
Tension in the deep buttock muscles can irritate the nerve along its path.
Sustained postures
Long drives and long periods seated frequently provoke symptoms.
How we treat it
Our approach
- Find the sourceAssessment traces the symptoms back to where the nerve is actually being irritated.
- Neurological screeningWhere there is weakness or persistent numbness we screen carefully and refer if warranted.
- Targeted treatmentDecompression, mobilisation and dry needling directed at the cause, not at the leg.
- RehabilitationRestoring tolerance to sitting, bending and loading so symptoms do not return.

Questions
Sciatica questions
Is sciatica the same as a slipped disc?
No. Sciatica describes the pattern of pain along the sciatic nerve. A disc problem is one of several possible causes.
Why does my leg hurt when my back feels fine?
A nerve irritated at its root often refers symptoms along its whole path, so the leg can hurt while the back feels unremarkable.
When should I be worried?
Progressive weakness, numbness around the saddle area, or any change in bladder or bowel control needs urgent medical attention, not chiropractic care.
Can it be treated without medication?
Many cases respond to manual care and rehabilitation. Where medication is appropriate that is a conversation for your doctor.
